My name is Lorraine Buchanan, a black mother from Crown Heights, Brooklyn. I have worked with children of all ages since the age of 16, starting as an afterschool volunteer working with elementary school students. In 2012, I received my Bachelor's degree in Psychology from CUNY- Hunter College. I went on to work as a Paraprofessional for grades K-8 for the NYC Department of Education. I worked with students of varying grades, skill levels, and abilities. I pursued my Master's degree in General Education, grades 1-6 from CUNY- Brooklyn College, completing it in December 2017. Since then, I have been substitute teaching elementary and junior high school students and adult education. Although math was scary for me growing up, I felt it was imperative to break down the wall of fear towards math, and Mathlene was born.
